Maurizio Galimberti
The installation was created at the Milan Metropolitan Market for the exposition of "Duomo Gotico Pungente" by Maurizio Galimberti (known for his photographic mosaics of polaroids).
The installation is a visual mosaic surrounded by urban sounds and noises, capable of offering diverse acoustic experiences depending on the angle from which it is observed.
Project & creation
The fragmented image manipulation by Galimberti matches our granular sound synthesis. In this installation the two methods become complementary showing two perspectives of the same subject: one in space, the other in time.
In the sound desing process, we used sounds from Piazza Duomo: from the Duomo organ (sampled classical organ pieces) to the recreation of the atmosphere and grandeur of the square. Birds, the square atmosphere, and the voices of people speaking (French, Italian, English, Arabic). These latter were hidden behind the canvas, and only audible when approaching the opera.
The most interesting part of the installation is the affinity between granular synthesis and Galimberti's work: from afar you have a blurred perception of the Duomo, but when approaching you see the single Polaroids and hear the clear sounds of Piazza Duomo.
